《流浪地球2》是由根据刘慈欣同名小说改编，是《流浪地球》的前传，以提出计划将建造1万座行星发动机的时代为背景，讲述了“太阳危机”即将来袭，世界危在旦夕，人类文明的延续将面临巨大挑战。

太阳即将毁灭，人类决定开启流浪地球计划，带着地球离开太阳系，人类在地球表面建造出巨大的推进器，宇宙之路危机四伏，为了拯救地球，流浪地球时代的年轻人再次挺身而出，展开争分夺秒的生死之战。

故事围绕《流浪地球》前传展开，那时“流浪”的行程还未起航，危机刚刚降临。人类在怀疑、冲突与分歧之中的命运一次次被改写，更加严峻的危机与冲突逐步展现，信息量十足。

据悉，《流浪地球2》中的太空电梯，延续了《流浪地球》中行星发动机写实感的设计风格。制片人龚格尔表示，希望用尽量贴合现实的设计，让观众相信这是可能实现的。为了真实展现太空电梯的动态，剧组给电梯轿厢的底部铺满了弹簧以及电机，郭帆导演笑称：“开动起来跟拖拉机一样，手都在震。”他还透露，在这样的电梯里拍摄失重情况下的打斗戏难度极大，但也极具看点。

太空电梯的概念自首次被现代宇宙航行学的奠基人齐奥尔科夫斯基提出后，便反复出现在阿瑟·克拉克、阿西莫夫等科幻巨匠的小说中，成为科幻小说中的代表性奇观。但它究竟依靠何种动力往返于天地之间，人们众说纷纭。对此，《流浪地球2》主创团队做了大量研究。影片视效总监徐建表示，片中的太空电梯采用的是分段式动力推进，从发动机喷射，通过磁力抓取和空间站对接。太空电梯轿厢返回大气层的时候，则通过摩擦生热燃烧冰盾的方式极大地节省返回成本。

影片为观众展现了独特且宏大的世界观，更多充满想象力的丰富情节也在一步步露出真容。无论看得见的视觉特效，还是感受得到的故事氛围与质感，相较前作都在稳步升级中。与此同时，全体演员也在用心、拼尽全力诠释好自身角色，希望在2023年大年初一，给观众带来全新的观影感受。
